Paul Simon lATER With Jools Holland

He played there:

Me & Julio

Outrageous

Father and Daughter

Graceland

It started off with the end of 'Me & Julio' and everyone was clapping. David Gilmore was there, Elvis Costello and others I can't remember ... first Paul sang 'Outrageous'. He was wearing a little green sweater! Everyone gets a go to play and Paul got plenty. Jools then interviewed him. He was sitting at a piano and Jools went over to him and he's such a gentleman, he stood up and shook his hand! I've never seen him so shy, he was quite shy! And uncomfortable, I thought he looked like he didn't really want to be interviewed. Jools told he would sit beside him at the piano. He just asked him the usual questions, why it took 6 years and Paul mentioned 9/11 and the fact that he's turned 60 "stopped" him but he added "I'm still here". Then he was asked about the album which Jools had in his hand and Paul just talked about Brian Eno. Then Jools said "We have some archive footage of you. I know you don't like looking at archive footage but you can avert your eyes and we'll enjoy it!" Paul looked a little embarrassed and said "I'll look down" and he did! It was heart-breaking. The footage they had was from about 1975 of Paul singing '50 Ways' and he had this hilarious mustache but he did look fine. At the end Paul still was refusing to look but he started talking to Jools about the drum beat and how it came about and I think it was to distract people because he was really embarrassed, bless him!

Then Jools asked him who he knew in the studio and he just said he played with a couple of them in the New Orleans Jazz Festival and he knows Elvis Costello for years and also David Gilmore whom he jammed with once (on 'Johnny Be Good') in 1964 when the two of them were booked to play at a debutante party! Jools joked "You could have ended up part of 'Pink Floyd" and Paul, dead pan, replied "He could have ended up part of Simon & Gilmore" and everyone laughed. He stood up again when Jools got down from the piano. After that he sang 'Father & Daughter' and later he sang 'Graceland'.
