Montauk

On August 25, 2018 (Saturday) at the Montauk Music Festival’s fundraiser event “Montauk Music Festival Rocks The Lighthouse” held at the Montauk Point Lighthouse grounds, Paul Simon made a surprise appearance.

  • He performed a short set of four of his songs: “Late in the Evening”, “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”, “Me & Julio Down by the Schoolyard”, and “You Can Call Me Al”.
  • The event was a benefit for the lighthouse and was intended to stay intimate and local, so the surprise nature was part of the intention.
  • Attendance numbers vary: some sources say “at least 3,000 people” eventually admitted.
  • Paul lived in Montauk for many years, and this appearance connected with his local presence.
  • This surprise show was quite informal compared to large tour dates — smaller scale, community-oriented.
  • It tied back to his earlier Montauk-area charitable efforts (he had organised “Back at the Ranch” concerts in the 1990s, also for the lighthouse/shoreline) so it had a sense of return.
  • The Montauk Point Lighthouse is one of the oldest active lighthouses in the US, and the event helped raise funds for its upkeep.
  • The festival organiser noted that the venue (the lighthouse grounds) provides a dramatic backdrop — the lighthouse, the sea, the full-moon, the quiet community vibe.
  • The secrecy was deliberate: the organiser even requested no social-media postings early, to preserve the intimate feel.
