Simon & Garfunkel's reunion world tour in the early 1980s saw PA-out soundboards leaked from various eras. While the 1982 album "OSAKA STADIUM 1982 SOUNDBOARD" is still fresh in our minds, a soundboard capturing the August Vancouver performance in superb sound quality from the following year has been circulating for some time.
This soundboard first appeared under the title "LISTEN TO THE SILENCE," and due to its exceptionally high-quality PA soundboard, it has since been reissued by several other labels. It's even now being released on Grayzone CD. However, its prolific release has led to its downfall, making it a soundboard that is surprisingly unfamiliar to enthusiasts. In fact, it's not surprising to wonder, "Was a soundboard leaked in '83 as well?"
This version of the overlooked '83 soundboard has been independently restored by a enthusiast and made available online. While the original soundboard boasted exceptionally clear sound quality, the roughness inherent in the PA output has been effectively alleviated. First and foremost, it eliminates the "buzzing" hum that was prominent in the quiet sections, clearly distinguishing it from previously released items.
This is because S&G not only features quiet arrangements of songs like "Scarborough Fair" and "Old Friends / Bookends," but also many quiet parts, such as the opening of "El Condor Pasa (If I Could)" and "The Sounds of Silence." The presence of the hum can be a real turn-off, and it's also the reason for the recent hiatus in releases despite the soundboard's clear sound quality.
While the resolution of this issue alone would have made it worthy of a limited-edition CD, what's even more noteworthy is the clarity of the sound itself. One of the appeals of this recording was the easy-to-listen-to sound quality, even for a PA soundboard. This time, however, the sound quality has been reborn with an even clearer, more expansive sound. The PA out recording, which was once a soundboard but challenging for beginners, is now much easier to listen to. With such clarity, even beginners unfamiliar with PA outs can enjoy it with ease.
The '83 world tour has often been overlooked because there were far fewer items compared to the previous year's Japan tour, but in fact, it has shown significant changes since the Japan tour. First of all, the band members have completely changed. Even Steve Gadd has left, and instead, Dave Weckl has been hired to play synth drums.
Furthermore, saxophonist Mark Rivera would join Billy Joel's tour a few months later and continue to be his right-hand man. He was already demonstrating his talent at this point, contributing to a more contemporary sound than the previous year. The band was coming together so well in '83, it's hard not to wish they could have continued as S&G.
As proof, the '83 tour featured two new songs, "Cars are Cars" and "Think Too Much," which Paul would later release as a solo artist, demonstrating that they were still very much in the business of making an album as S&G. In particular, on "Think Too Much," the band and Paul were not in sync at the beginning, as it was a new song, and he couldn't help but laugh... This mishap is captured so vividly with clear sound quality, making it truly entertaining to listen to.
Then, at the beginning of the finale, "The Sounds of Silence," Paul plays "Anji," reminiscent of S&G's classic live shows, and it's sure to take your breath away. This tear-jerking moment for die-hard fans will be enjoyed with exceptionally clear sound quality.
The R&B cover of "One Summer Night" was also performed in the second half of the show, something not seen last year. Art's velvety voice shines through here, creating a truly captivating performance. The soundboard, which captured the 1983 S&G stage performance with outstanding sound quality, has been reborn with even greater clarity, a major improvement over the previous year's Japan tour!
